About the Bible Bingo Cards

The Bible Bingo Cards are divided into sections that correspond to the sections of the Bible:

On the first 3 rows of the Bible Bingo Cards are books of the Old Testament. The leftmost column contains the books of the Law (with a dark green border), followed by History (light green border), Poetry (purple border), Major Prophets (dark blue border) and Minor Prophets (light blue border).

On the bottom 2 rows are books of the New Testament. Although the New Testament is divided into 5 sections in the Bible, we have divided it into only 3 sections in this game since 2 of these sections comprise only 1 book each. The leftmost column contains the books of the Gospels together with the only History book (with a red border), followed by Letters from Paul (yellow border) and General Letters together with the only Prophecy book (pink border).

Note that the border colors on the Bible Bingo Cards correspond to the colors on the Bible Bingo Calling Cards.

How to Play Bible Bingo

Give each player 1 Bible Bingo Card. (If you like, you can also give each player 2 or more cards.)

Have everyone cross out the “Free Space” square in the middle of their Bible Bingo Cards. Alternatively, use a Bingo chip, M&M, jellybean, bead, Lego, coin or any small toy to mark the square.

The game leader picks 1 Bible Bingo Calling Card at a time from the stack and calls out the book of the Bible and the section which it falls under.

Players with that book on their Bible Bingo Card can cross out that square.

The first player to cross out 5 squares in a row (in any direction) and shouts “Bible Bingo!” wins.

Bible Lesson – Books and Sections of the Bible

Discuss
1. Did you enjoy this game?
2. Was it easy to find the various books of the Bible on your Bible Bingo Cards? What was a quick way to find the various books?

Say
In addition to an image and the name of the book, the Bible Bingo Calling Cards also show which section on the Bible Bingo Cards these books can be found. This helps us quickly locate the books on the Bible Bingo Cards.

Let’s play a different game right now.
Instead of looking for books of the Bible on our Bible Bingo Cards, we will look for a specific Bible passage in our Bibles.
(Ensure that everyone has a hardcopy Bible.)
Let’s see who can be the first to locate 2 Timothy 3:16-17 in the Bible…

Discuss
3. (Ask the fastest person.) Tell us how you managed to find these verses so quickly?
4. (Ask a volunteer who struggled to locate these verses.) What can help you find these verses quicker the next time?

Say
The Bible is not one single book, but a collection of 66 smaller books that tell one unified story.
Just like the Bible Bingo Cards are divided into sections, these 66 books of the Bible are organized into sections.
Being familiar with how the Bible is organized helps us quickly find specific passages in the Bible.

Discuss
5. The Bible is divided into two main parts. What are the names of these parts?
6. What are some differences between the Old Testament and the New Testament?

7. How are the 39 books of the Old Testament organized?
8. What are the 5 sections of the Old Testament called?
9. How would you describe each of these 5 sections?

10. How are the 27 books of the New Testament organized?
11. What are these 5 sections called?
12. How would you describe each of these 5 sections?

13. How important is it for us to know the organization of the Bible into the various sections that we have just discussed?

Conclude
Being familiar with the 66 books of the Bible and how they are organized helps us more quickly locate specific passages in the Bible. More importantly, knowing which section of the Bible a passage is taken from gives us an idea of its genre and helps us understand the passage better.

This is a fabulous game, especially for lockdown. I’ve played it last week with my school’s Christian Union via Teams. I split the .pdf file containing the Bingo cards and uploaded them separately to the team. Each participant downloaded a different card and then I read out the cards, bingo master style via the group call we were in. It was really good fun. Afterwards, we took it in turns to explain why a certain image was used to represent each book of the Bible – a great way to make younger students more familiar with books of the Bible they might not have encountered before. I also linked it with an overview of the whole salvation story arc. Thank you for making it freely available.
