This Sunday School Lesson requires some advance preparation. For a consolidated summary of preparation, supplies and free printables required, please scroll to the bottom of this lesson.
1. Get Them Curious – Dream Party Menu
Divide into small groups.
(We suggest a group size of 3-5 kids. Groups can be larger, but smaller groups allow everyone to be involved.)
Tell the children to imagine that they are planning a party.
As a group, they have to decide:
- What is the special occasion for the party?
- What food will they be serving?
Give each group:
- Paper
- Several kids’ menus that kids can cut up (print these off the internet)
- Scissors
- Glue
- Markers
Each group must create the most delicious menu for their special occasion.
(Encourage them to be go crazy and include all their favorite foods.)
Either write, draw, or cut out the items they like from the sample kids’ menus provided.
Have each group present their menu to the class.
Discuss:
- Which was your favorite menu?
- What are some occasions for parties?
Say: In today’s Bible story, Jesus and his disciples gathered to celebrate a Jewish festival. Let’s watch a video on The Last Supper.
Pray: Dear God, thank you for parties and celebrations! And thank you for Jesus! Please teach us more about Jesus through today’s Bible story, The Last Supper. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
2. Screen Time – The Last Supper
This is our favorite YouTube video on The Last Supper: https://youtu.be/SigoALSS1R8
Before you begin, tell the children to pay attention to 2 very special items that Jesus and the disciples ate and drank during the meal.
3. Make it Stick – The Last Supper Picture Story
Remember to download The Last Supper Picture Story Printable and Slide 2 (The Last Supper Picture Story Sequence).
For The Last Supper Picture Story Printable, you will need to print 1 copy for each group of kids.
(We suggest a group size of 3-5 kids. Groups can be larger, but smaller groups allow everyone to be involved.)
Discuss: What Bible story did we just watch?
Show Slide 1 (Sunday School Lesson Title & Bible Reference):
For older kids, you may like to have them open their Bibles to Luke 22:7-23.
Divide into small groups.
Give each group:
- The Last Supper Story Pictures Printable
- Scissors
Tell kids that the pictures in the printable are in the wrong order.
Within their groups, they must cut up the pictures, arrange them in the correct order, and recall today’s story.
Give the groups enough time to talk through the story.
When all the groups are done, show Slide 2 (The Last Supper Picture Story Sequence).
For each picture in the slide, have one group volunteer to tell that part of the story.
Here are some questions you may ask to prompt the kids:
What festival were the Jewish people celebrating?
How did the disciples find the place where Jesus planned to eat the Passover meal?
What did Jesus say about the bread?
- What did Jesus say about the wine?
What did Jesus say about one of the disciples?
What did Jesus promise His disciples?
4. Dig Deeper – Celebrations Pictionary
Remember to download, print and cut up the Celebrations Pictionary Cards in advance.
Remove any of the cards with celebrations that your class may not be familiar with.
Have volunteers take turns to pick a card and, without speaking, draw the special day.
The rest of the class must try to guess the special day.
Discuss:
- Which did you enjoy more? Drawing or guessing?
- Was it easy to draw these special days? Why or why not?
Say:
- Some special days are easy to draw because of symbols that are commonly associated with them.
- For example, when you draw a cake with candles, most people will think of birthdays.
Show the children the Holy Communion elements.
(Ideally, show the kids what your church uses. Alternatively, show a picture of these elements.)
Discuss: In today’s video, what does Jesus want the bread and the wine to remind us of?
Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Say:
- While Jesus was eating with His disciples, He knew that He would leave them soon. One of His disciples would betray Him, and He would be put to death on a cross.
- But Jesus did not deserve to die on a cross. He is the Son of God. While He was on earth, He did many wonderful things like healing the sick, walking on water, and raising people from the dead. He was perfect and He never sinned.
- Jesus died on the cross not because of His own sins but ours. Instead of us being punished for all the wrong things that we have done, Jesus took our place.
- Because of what Jesus did, our sins can be forgiven, and we can have a relationship with God.
If you have pre-believer kids in your class, you may like to do a Gospel presentation and invite them to put their faith in Jesus. Here are some resources that you may find helpful: www.LetTheLittleChildrenCome.com
Say:
- Jesus did not want His disciples to forget about Him.
- Jesus wants us to regularly take the bread and wine to remind ourselves about Him.
- This special meal is called Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper. We have this special meal regularly in church.
- The bread reminds us of Jesus’ body, and the wine reminds us of His blood.
- The bread and wine remind us that Jesus died on the cross for our sins.
Show Slide 3 (Big Idea):
Have everyone read the slide.
5. Walk the Talk – Fridge Magnet
Remember to download, print and cut up The Last Supper Fridge Magnet Printable in advance.

3. Paste it onto the foam sheet.
4. Cut the foam sheet into any shape you like.
5. Paste the magnet on the back of the foam sheet.
Have everyone read the text on their fridge magnets.
Discuss:
- Who said this?
- What did Jesus mean by “do this”?
Have everyone read the slide.
Discuss:
- What does Jesus want His disciples to remember?
- Why is it important that we remember that Jesus died on the cross for our sins?
Say:
- Jesus wants us to remember that He died on the cross for our sins, so that we will…
- Always remember that Jesus loves us, and that we are precious to Him.
- Be thankful to Jesus for taking the punishment for our sins.
- Trust and obey Jesus because He loves us so much that He died on the cross for our sins.
- Love and honor others because Jesus loves them and He wants us to love them too.

6. Take it Home – Remember…

Say: How can we live out today’s lesson?
Show Slide 5 again (Live it Out):
Have everyone read the slide.
Say: From today’s Bible story, we learned that the bread and wine remind us that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Jesus wants us to regularly remind ourselves about this.
Discuss:
- Do you sometimes forget things? Tell us more.
- What can you do if you want to make sure that you don’t forget something important?
Say:
- We made a fridge magnet today.
- We can use this to help us remember Jesus.
- We can stick it on the fridge (or anywhere else) where we will see it every day.
Discuss: Where would you put this fridge magnet if you want to use it to remind you about Jesus?
Give each child a copy of The Last Supper Take it Home Handout and The Last Supper Word Search.
Say:
- Jesus wants us to regularly remind ourselves that He died for the forgiveness of our sins.
- Let’s write down your personal response to God in the Live it Out section on the first page. Then spend some time on your own talking to God about these things.
Here are some responses that kids can write:
- I will give thanks to Jesus for dying on the cross for my sins.
- I will remember that Jesus loves me.
- I will remember that I am precious to Jesus.
- I will trust and obey Jesus.
- I will love and honor everyone.
Say: The other pages are for you to do at home. Tell me next week about what you did at home!
Give everyone some time to write down their Live it Out action plan before ending the lesson with this closing prayer:
Pray: Dear Jesus, thank you for today’s Bible lesson on The Last Supper. Thank you that you love us so much that you died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. We confess that we have done wrong things; please forgive us. Please help us to regularly remind ourselves about you and your death on the cross for our sins. Please help us to always trust and obey you, Jesus. Please also help us love everyone around us. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
